Each doll came with specially designed fashion that made it easy for little girls to dress their friends all by themselves! Just pop the kneeling posed doll into her dress, attatch the velcro fasteners on the back of the dress and shes ready to play. The doll’s are 7″ tall when dressed.

Playskool produced four Sweetie pops dolls: Party Time, Ballerina, School Time, and Party Girl. Dolls were sold with an outfit included.

Xavier Roberts Little people soft sculpture dolls

6 Jun

1983 Xavier Roberts Little people 24″ blond boy doll

Xavier Roberts produced the “Little People” from 1976 – 1983  in an old renovated medical clinic in Cleveland Georgia dubbed “Baby Land General”. The dolls were entirely soft sculpture-each was an original one-of-a-kind creation. Guests were greeted by employees dressed in full hospital garb. Rooms were filled with incubators and the wonderful “Mother Cabbage” cabbage patch of newborn babies just waiting for a little shot of ‘Imagicillin’. New ‘moms’ and ‘dads’ were given a lovingly swaddled “Little Person” to love, cherish, and adopt as their very own. Little People were not purchased, but adopted; not made, but delivered. Each doll came with adoption papers.

Then the CRAZE began! In 1982, Xavier Roberts sold mass-marketing rights to Coleco. Coleco kept the same style as the Xavier Roberts originals, except for using vinyl heads on their dolls and making the Cabbage dolls smaller, typically about 16″ versus 24″ for Little People. They renamed these dolls “Cabbage Patch Kids”.

Little People are more desirable than Cabbage Patch dolls, and some Little People dolls are worth more than others. There are a few key factors to look for when evaluating the value of a Little People doll.

  1. Make sure the doll is entirely soft sculpture (no plastic parts)
  2. The tag will say “Xavier Roberts The Little People” on one side and have bathing instructions on the other side.

  3. They will not have original boxes as the dolls were carried out of Babyland general in their parents’ arms.
  4. They will have a large thumb.
  5. Little People have a signed tush that says ‘Xavier Roberts’ just like Cabbage Patch kids do. But the most desirable Little People have ‘Xavier Roberts signature hand signed with a large X rather than stamped.
  6. They will measure between 18″ – 24″ tall.

Here are two examples of a Little People signed tush. One is stamped and the other is the highly desired hand written signature.

Per the original tag instructions from 1983, Bathing instructions are as follows:Dilute small amount of mild liquid detergent in water. Gently scrub dirty area with medium bristle toothbrush dipped in this solution. Wipe using clean water. Blot with a clean terry towel and dry quickly in warm area or use a fan (not a hair dryer). For complete bath contact Babyland General.

1985 Mattel My Child 15″ plush jointed doll

These dolls are 15″ tall and have joints at the hips, shoulders and necks. They have  hard plastic heads which are covered with a fuzzy coating called flocking. The bodies are filled with soft stuffing and covered with a soft flesh colored flannel fabric. The hair is rooted. The eyes are plastic and embedded into the head. Each doll has a heart shaped sticker/emblem on their tush that says “my child”.

These dolls were made by Mattel in 1985. Mattel continued to make versions of this doll in boy and girl with different skin, hair and eye colors until 1988. These dolls were marketed to look like the little girls who would be their “mommies” – thus the wide array of  skin, hair, eye color and even hair styles available.

In 1987 Mattel discontinued the “my child” heart marking on the tush of the dolls and in 1988 discontinued the red haired doll.

Starting in 1987 the dolls were available in many different countries around the world: Italy where they were marketed under the product name of “My Love”, France they were known as “Mon Enfant”, Germany they were called “Mein Kind”,  and in Holland they were known as “Mijn Kleintje”.

These dolls are wildly popular even today, 26 years later, with doll collectors around the world!!

1991 Mattel Popcorn Pretties dolls

1991 Mattel Popcorn Pretties Lily Lemon

1991 Mattel Popcorn Pretties Lily Lemon

Popcorn Pretties were produced by Mattel in 1991. They were a set of dolls similar to Cupcakes dolls in that they each wore a hat and their skirts turned inside out so that they could turn into popcorn (rather than cupcakes). When thrown onto the ground their skirts would “pop” back the right way again and turn back into a doll.

There are 8 Popcorn Pretties. Each came with a hat and a removeable over-skirt and each was scented like her name.

Here are the names of the dolls:
  1. Lily Lemon
  2. Blueberry Betty
  3. Miss Candy Apple
  4. Fancy Fruity
  5. Grape Jily
  6. Patti Peach
  7. Lotta Chocolate
  8. Sherri Cherry

1986 Playskool Grandma’s Marshmallow Babies plush doll

22 May

1986 Playskool Grandma's Marshmallow Babies plush

Grandma’s Marshmallow Babies were made by Playskool in 1986.  They are about 17″ long. These dolls have a soft cotton body with arms, legs, and head made of a tight sweater-like knit. They eyes and facial features are embroidered and the hair is yarn.

Playskool wanted to emulate the days when Grandma  hand-made individual dolls for their granddaughters; thus these dolls featured many small variations in so that they would be as different and as special as each of the little girls that would own them. Color variations include the color of the knit skin, embroidered eyes, and yarn hair.

These dolls also smelled of marshmallow when their tummy’s were squeezed. Adding scent to a doll was a popular marketing gimick of many 1980’s dolls.

This is the cloth body. Note "marshmallow babies" written on the white cloth.

1968 Ideal Little Lost Baby 22″ doll three faces

21 May

The doll is 22″ tall. The doll has 3 faces: sad, happy, and sleeping. The doll is a talking doll. It laughs at the happy face, cries at the sad face. The doll takes a C battery located at the base of the back. The doll came with a lever at the back base of her neck. Move the lever to see her face change between the sad face, happy face, and sleeping face. It wears a pink tweed snow suit with built in feet and hood. The clothing is non-removeable. The hood is also fixed in place-it ALWAYS covers the babies head. The white fur trim is a nice detail. The unfortunate part of the clothing being fixed in place are that cleaning the outfit and fixing un-done seams and other dis-repair are impossible with a simple machine washing and sewing machine.
