1983 Xavier Roberts Little people 24″ blond boy doll

Xavier Roberts produced the “Little People” from 1976 – 1983  in an old renovated medical clinic in Cleveland Georgia dubbed “Baby Land General”. The dolls were entirely soft sculpture-each was an original one-of-a-kind creation. Guests were greeted by employees dressed in full hospital garb. Rooms were filled with incubators and the wonderful “Mother Cabbage” cabbage patch of newborn babies just waiting for a little shot of ‘Imagicillin’. New ‘moms’ and ‘dads’ were given a lovingly swaddled “Little Person” to love, cherish, and adopt as their very own. Little People were not purchased, but adopted; not made, but delivered. Each doll came with adoption papers.

Then the CRAZE began! In 1982, Xavier Roberts sold mass-marketing rights to Coleco. Coleco kept the same style as the Xavier Roberts originals, except for using vinyl heads on their dolls and making the Cabbage dolls smaller, typically about 16″ versus 24″ for Little People. They renamed these dolls “Cabbage Patch Kids”.

Little People are more desirable than Cabbage Patch dolls, and some Little People dolls are worth more than others. There are a few key factors to look for when evaluating the value of a Little People doll.

  1. Make sure the doll is entirely soft sculpture (no plastic parts)
  2. The tag will say “Xavier Roberts The Little People” on one side and have bathing instructions on the other side.

    Little People tag 1975

  3. They will not have original boxes as the dolls were carried out of Babyland general in their parents’ arms.
  4. They will have a large thumb.
  5. Little People have a signed tush that says ‘Xavier Roberts’ just like Cabbage Patch kids do. But the most desirable Little People have ‘Xavier Roberts signature hand signed with a large X rather than stamped.
  6. They will measure between 18″ – 24″ tall.

    Little People tag 1983

Here are two examples of a Little People signed tush. One is stamped and the other is the highly desired hand written signature.

Stamped tush

Per the original tag instructions from 1983, Bathing instructions are as follows:Dilute small amount of mild liquid detergent in water. Gently scrub dirty area with medium bristle toothbrush dipped in this solution. Wipe using clean water. Blot with a clean terry towel and dry quickly in warm area or use a fan (not a hair dryer). For complete bath contact Babyland General.

I sold the doll featured in this article for $100 in May of 2011. He was in very good condition. His clothing was original and also in excellent condition. As you can see from the pictures, his tush tag was intact, and he had a stamped tush. His paperwork was unfortunately missing. He was a lovely doll and a part of the buyer’s treasured collection I am sure to this very day.

I do specialize in Xavier Roberts Little People dolls. I offer appraisals on them, and the Cabbage Patch dolls. Visit the appraisal tab at the top of the page for more information.

Hi Katrina, thanks for the informative article! I have a Little People doll who is in mint condition from 1983. She has all her paperwork, nametag is still attached, + a “Cabbage Patch Dispatch,” summer 1983 magazine – and her original diaper! She is a curly haired red-head. She has a stamped signature on her tush. She was meant as a gift to me as a small child – but I didn’t get her till my teens – so she has been safely stored in the plastic bag I got her in – all these years… I did notice today that she does not have shoes – which is odd.

I was wondering what an appropriate price would be to list her as… I did a little research and it seems these dolls [cloth] vary from $60 – 200. But even at $200 many of the listings indicate “slight wear” on the doll. Mine has none… Is $200 a fair price for a mint Little People doll?

Alternately, would you happen to know of any sites that Little People collectors frequent?

    Thank you for your help!

Little people are worth ALOT more than your standard cabbage patch dolls made by Coleco.

The difference being that the Cabbage Patch dolls were mass produced.

Without pictures and more details it would be very hard for me to say what your doll is worth.

I recommend visiting a site such as eBay. Type in the details on the tag of your doll: maybe “1984 cabbage patch doll red hair”. Scroll through and find a doll similar to your doll in description, age, condition etc. This will give you an idea what other’s are asking for their dolls. You can also click completed listing located in the left hand side margin.

I have a small soft cabbage patch which has a “sprout” of blond hair on the top of her head. Her bum is signed on the right side in black marker and the left side is stamped. Her cheeks, bum, knees, and arms have a rosy look to them. She has no side tag and her stamp and signature is black ink. She does not have a side body tag. Her entire body is soft~even her head. I can send a photo if you would like to see her. She is wearing a yellow floral dress with bloomers and a diaper with diaper pins on both sides. Thanks for any info!

Hello! How interesting! A signed & stamped tush are certainly in the realm of possibility as I believe I read that Xavier Roberts did sign some of the stamped tushes……….no tags could mean some mis-guided child or adult removed them. Send me pictures if you’d like; I’d love to take a peek at your doll!

I have an original Xavier Roberts Little People Doll circa 1982 with adoption paperwork, authinticity tag and autographed stamped butt. She is in great condition (has been in plastic for many years) I am wanting to sell her as I never had children of my own to pass her on to. I have researched on Ebay and they aren’t selling well. Any suggestions?

      Hello!

The little people dolls are selling better than the mass produced cabbage patch dolls are, but you are indeed correct that they are not selling as well as we would like. The dolls dated in the late 1970’s are more desired, as well as the dolls with the ‘favored’ thumb and signed (rather than stamped) tush.

I just looked up a comparable doll to yours and it sold for $76.00. These dolls are worth more than this in my opinion.

I suggest plenty of pictures and a detailed description as well as a fixed price-not auction. Set your price at least 10% over the highest auction of a comparable doll. Then you have to be prepared to sit back and wait. Sometimes wait a very long time to get you asking price. Sorry, there is no magic.

      Good luck to you:)

Values vary with type of signature, condition of the doll, and accessories present.
Go to eBay and type the item into the search window, click completed listings. Then scroll through and find the dolls that are similar to your doll in type, accessories, and condition. Then you will have an idea of what your doll is worth.

    Hi Katrina,

I Have three Xavier Roberts Soft Sculpture little people Dolls. I love them, and would never part with them. Two are 22″ and one is around 25″ and all are in mint condition. My question is, I would love a couple more dresses, similar to the pretty lace vintage ones they are wearing. I’ve visited Baby Land, but they are mostly modern day clothes now, and several websites and even ebay. These adorable Lacey dresses, that most of these originals were purchased in, are so hard to find now. I haven’t tried human baby clothes yet, as I know the neck circumference of the little people is rather large. Do you have any suggestions where I could find these fancy little dresses to fit my Little People. Thanks so much Katrina.

      Hello!
It seems that there is a void in the marketplace for these little people clothes. Your best bet is to find a talented seamstress who can make a pattern from your original little people dresses and make more for you. I am sorry that I cannot be of more assistance.
This would be a great business idea for a talented seamstress because, as you know, there is not a source of clothing available for these wonderful dolls.

        Hi Katrina,
Good idea…..In fact, I know a wonderful seamstress that’s very affordable, I don’t know why I didn’t think of this myself. That way I can have them made exactly how I want them. Thank’s so much! Have a Great Day!

I have 11 people pals , 2 toddler standing edition, and the Grand Edition which are all in excellent condition. I would like to know what the worth is. Can you tell me how I can send their pictures to you? I would really like to know what they are worth. All from the early 80’s. I also have several cloth cabbage patches. I think in total I have about 30-40 dolls.

Hi Katrina, I have Little People doll, she is about 24″ tall, has the thumb that you referred to in your article. She has blond pig tails and a stamped bottom. The tag says The Little People soft sculptures 1978 and the signature on the tag looks to be in gold or bronze not black (it has a metallic look to it). I was wondering what she is worth?

Hi Katrina, I have 2 original Little People from his other clinic in Decatur, GA. These are tush stamped and not sure about a tag – would have to look as it has been since 1980. He closed Decatur when he sold rights in 1982 and Cabbage Patch Kids were born. Great nostalgic read.

I haven’t seen any pals for sale. My mother lost the birth certificates. I am interested in selling both. I live in s.c. Would love to hear from you for some pointers as to price and best place to sell

Hi Katrina, I don’t think my other post has gone through. I just had a question about the doll I purchased in the 80’s from the Babyland in Gatlinburg, TN. She has everything the Little People dolls have except the signature. There is not a signature on this doll at all. When we purchased her she was in a glass case at the hospital. Is the doll a fake???

Without doing a detailed appraisal, there is no way for me to know for sure if your doll is authentic or not. What a can say is that I have come across dolls in the past with no signature on the bum. Thanks for visiting my blog.

Katrina, I have one of first Little People by Mr. Robert’s. I have read several articles about these dolls however none have mentioned a bracelet. Mine has her name spelled out like hospitals did in the 50’s. Can you shed any light on this? She has the first Xavier signature with the larger X. She also has the earliest label on the side.
